Degenerate Fragment

This ceramic work reinterprets Pregnant Woman (1918) by Emy Roeder, encountered as a fragment on display at PETRI Berlin. Rather than reconstructing the original, I respond to its condition as an artifact—marked by time, loss, and erasure.

Labeled “degenerate” under Adolf Hitler, Roeder’s figure resists idealization. It does not restore the original, but honors its persistence.

Degenerate Art exhibition (German: Die Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst") was an art exhibition organized by Adolf Ziegler and the Nazi Party in Munich.

Degenerate art was defined as works that "insult German feeling, or destroy or confuse natural form or simply reveal an absence of adequate manual and artistic skill”

During archaeological excavations carried out in advance of construction on a subway extension in Berlin , 11 masterpieces of early Modernism were unearthed.

An appropriate moment to recreate this sculpture, a terracotta head fragment of "Schwangere" ("Pregnant Woman"), created in 1918 by the German artist Emy Roeder (1890–1971).
